The beginning
I didn't start in cybersecurity. Nobody handed me a career roadmap. I started in GRC — Governance, Risk, and Compliance — which in hindsight was the perfect foundation, even if I didn't know it at the time.
What I did have was a willingness to keep going. To study when I was tired. To apply to roles I wasn't sure I was qualified for. To ask questions and keep learning even when progress felt slow.
Over six years, that consistency built something real: a career in cloud security management that I'm genuinely proud of. But the path wasn't straight, and it wasn't easy — and there were moments where having someone in my corner would have made everything faster and clearer. That's the version of support I want to give to other people.
Why I started mentoring
Mentoring started for me the way most meaningful things do — not as a plan, but as a response to a need I kept seeing.
People in my network were struggling with the same questions I'd struggled with. Which certifications actually matter? How do you get past the experience catch-22? How do you navigate visa sponsorship in the UK? How do you position yourself when your CV doesn't look like what job descriptions ask for?
I had answers to most of these questions — hard-won, practical answers. And I started sharing them. What I noticed was simple: people moved faster with a mentor than without one. I was lucky enough to have that support at a crucial point in my own career. It made a real difference. I want to pass that forward.
What makes me different
A lot of career coaches will tell you what to put on your CV. I'm more interested in what's going on in your head.
The biggest barrier most people face isn't skills — it's the belief that they don't have what it takes. That they're too late. That they don't have the right background. That the people who make it are somehow fundamentally different from them.
They're not.
I've mentored people who came into our first conversation convinced they couldn't do it — wrong background, no degree, wrong age, wrong starting point — and watched them land jobs they'd written off as impossible. Mindset is the foundation. Strategy sits on top of it. You need both.
Where I am now
Cloud Security Manager. Manchester. Six years in.
Still learning every day — because that's the only way to stay sharp in a field that moves as fast as cybersecurity. Still mentoring — because there's nothing more satisfying than watching someone who was stuck become someone who's unstoppable.
“Everyone deserves a chance. Someone gave me mine. These guides — and every conversation I have with people I mentor — are how I give it back.”
